Before Christmas I had an order from Blomma based in South Korea, here you will find lovely collections of home wares, stationary etc
They took some lovely pictures of my cushions together - I will be doing the vintage patch cushion in a 16" size (and maybe even a blanket) and will put it on my website soon...

I have just had my website revamped with help from a great web expert Miko and can now update it myself (which I am doing between knitting!)

- just need to get the photos done - my 'to do' list is getting longer and longer!

Top Drawer spring 2012

I was really pleased to be invited to have a stand at Top Drawer trade show at Earls court last week as part of a group of 12 designer/makers chosen for an area called 'Spotted' This group was put together by Charlotte Abrahams, a freelance style and interior writer.
The venue was so enormous I felt a bit overwhelmed at first but it went very well and I met some great designers in my fellow exhibitors and it was interesting talking to the buyers - now I just need to make up all my orders!
I have posted a picture of my stand after setting up on Saturday - I had some great birch ply display boxes made up by Whitten Timber in Peckham - they were so helpful.
I also made a new BIG dog cushion! (also made BIG owl but he's not ready for a picture yet)
My camera then ran out of battery so no pictures during the show!

Farewell to Barbara Hepworth in Dulwich park

I felt sad today when I walked past the spot where this wonderful Barbara Hepworth sculpture once stood in Dulwich park, stolen, now just two sawn off stumps.

So its been a while since my last post, I have been in a Christmas knitting frenzy, I am developing large knitting machine muscles on my right arm!
I just bought this vintage handmade ornament on Etsy from becaruns vintage shop, to get in the mood for Christmas!
There are a few Christmas events I am getting ready for,trying to build up my stock of cushions, toys etc, the first of which is at Dulwich Picture Gallery on Thursday 17th Nov in the evening, find out more here - it should be a fun first Christmassy evening of the year! (in a lovely setting)

.....after that is The Crafty Fox Market at The Dogstar, Brixton.

Patchwork Puzzles

I have been working on a few new designs (when I get 2 seconds free!) and have made some larger cushions by patching knitted squares together - some old designs and some new, the idea came from looking at my Galt puzzle collection. Also I thought I would try to do something a bit more for girls as well as boys - I don't know why but ideas for boys come to me so much easier! I had a mention in an article for 'Kid's Wear Department' which featured my Dolly - thanks for that Julia, so nice to be in good company!

Flotta chair finished!

I managed to finish the Flotta chair for Rebecca during the summer. This was such an interesting commission, Peter came up with an unusual and stunning design based on Rebecca's Grandmothers' life on Flotta, one of the Orkney Islands. Parker Knoll meets Lucienne Day

Just before the summer I upholstered this Parker Knoll chair for Andrew and Helen. They had been to the Robin and Lucienne Day exhibition at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester (sadly no longer on) Here it was possible to get some of the original textile designs reproduced on fabric. This was done at the Glasgow School of Art.
The design used for this chair was called 'Magnetic' by Lucienne Day, in colour red.

Summer is over

This summer started off with 2 lovely weeks in the south of France staying with great friends near Montpellier.
We saw the striking architecture at La Grande-Motte where we had great mussels, chips and beer... had lots of home grown tomatoes (in every form!)...strolled around Montpellier on a warm evening (see the tromp l'oiel in the center of town)... swam in the pool and went camping in the Ardeche. The campsite Mille Etoiles was peaceful and relaxing with a steep walk down to the bottom of a gorge rewarded with a swim in the river.

I spent a wonderful week in Northern Ireland at my Mum's in co. Down - its so good to get some fresh air, windy beaches and fresh veg from the garden - and see all my nieces and nephews!

During our stay in Ireland we visited the Aquarium at Portaferry - I love these ghost like Ray with what looks like little faces on their tummys - (we learnt they are breathing holes not faces!)

We finished the holidays back in London, enjoying the almost last hot sunny day in south Kensington, splashing in the pool at the V&A on route to the Science Museum.

Embroidery at the Idler

I had a lovely day on Saturday teaching an Embroidery class at the Idler Academy on Westbourne park rd, London.
This is a wonderful place dedicated to teaching, learning and great coffee! Here is a description about what they are about taken from the website;

In Ancient Greece, the word which turned into our word for school, scholee, originally meant ‘leisure’. Education was a pleasure; it was a privilege freely chosen by the freeborn citizens of Athens. The Idler Academy brings this spirit of cultivated leisure to the 21st century, and crosses it with the lively atmosphere of an 18th century coffeehouse. We sell a wide range of new and secondhand books, largely educational in nature. We serve Monnouth coffee, Oolong tea from the Himalayas and Valrhona hot chocolate. We sell delicious cakes from Blueberry Hill. We run courses in academic and practical subjects, from Latin to embroidery, from book-keeping to ukulele, from life-drawing to ancient philosophy. I brought along a modern day sampler designed and printed by Peter and taught some basic stitches and variations on simple stitches to achieve this (almost) finished Sampler.
We had a wonderful lunch of salmon and asparagus, had delicious morning coffee and afternoon tea and cakes - a lovely way to spend a wet July Saturday.

Ercol Sofas

I have just finished making new cushions and covers for Alison's 2 Ercol day beds - they are all the rage for a reason, they are simple, elegant and comfortable!
Alison inherited one of the sofas from her grandmother and was keen to retain the shape of the old cushions which had sadly disintegrated, so we worked together to achieve a lovely curve on the seat and back cushions. The piping is made using the reverse of the fabric to give a slightly lighter shade - have to say I could do with a break from making piping - over 30m! (done twice as I used the right side of the fabric first!)

Idler Academy

This Saturday I will be teaching an embroidery class at the Idler Academy in west London. Look here for details. Peter has designed a modern sampler which will be printed on linen ready for some stitch work! I will be teaching how to build up basic stitch techniques to create a lovely finished sampler. This class will be suitable for anyone with basic sewing knowledge, it should be a fun day for making work!

Its been a busy month in the Nencini house with Sadie and Syds birthdays. Sadie wanted a big dolly with clothes so a few long late nights later (especially hand tying each strand of hair on - respect to all rug makers!) I came up with this Sadie doll - plus some outfits.
Syd got a DSi so to compensate I made a case to put it in!

I recently finished making up a small order of cushions that I worked on with Le train Fantome, featuring the lovely Lumi doll and Lewis rabbit, these are available in Fanja's Le train Fantome shop
I had bits and pieces of trial Lumi and Lewis knitted pattern which I made into lavender bags for Fanja - seemed a shame not to use them!

We recently had some pictures taken of our house by some lovely freelance photographer/journalists. They are working on a book project for Japanese publishers (www.editionsdeparis.com). Looking at homes of creative people - had to do some major dusting!
I just included a few pictures - my dolly collection! (featuring Lewis by 'le train fantome' and some of my old clothkits dolls amongst others)
The second picture is of a ceramic piece my Mum made for Peter and I for our wedding, and my favourite Svenskt Tenn pewter jewelery box.

Tiles and Patches

I have always loved this coffee table which came from my Grandad, part of the business where he worked sold tiles and they had this table made up in the fifties to show the different designs.
Unfortunately I had it in various student flats and it didn't fair to well! It is a bit cracked and broken but I still love it.
The table has inspired me to do these patchwork tile cushions - I have now been commissioned to create a patchwork bed head - I have laid out the patches to fit a wooden frame 72" x 18".

Flotta Chair

I have been working on an embroidered chair as a commission for Rebecca. The chair - or small sofa, has a wooden frame, I replaced the board, which was being used as a temporary seat with rubber pirelli webbing, (as it would have originally been) I sanded the frame back, waxed and polished the wood replaced a missing dowel from the back.I have the 'before' picture but not quite ready with the 'after' yet.

Peter has been working on a wonderful design which I am embroidering onto the cover to remake the cushions.
The chair belonged to Rebecca's grandmother who lived on a small island in the Orkneys called 'Flotta'
The embroidery design tells a story and links 2 pairs of people spanning two generations, Rebecca's grandmothers and her two children. Find out more about this fascinating design and story on Peter's blog, post 'Flotta 1'

Things have been busy since Peter and joined in with 'Artists Open House', an event that is part of Dulwich festival.
Beth came to our house and liked my London bus cushions but wanted a BIG london cushion to send to her sister in Australia - so I came up with this big London patchwork to fit a 24" cushion. Picture dominoes!

Morocco

We went to Morocco over Easter to a wonderful and peaeful place, south of Agadir on the coast, we stayed right by the beach, wonderful walks, flowers and buildings.

Cross stitch chair and knitted pouff

I have been working away on some new things for this coming Mid Century Modern show in Dulwich college this (Sunday 20th March). I bought a lovely vintage Swedish cross stitch runner from ajabaja49 on ebay which has inspired this chair and pouff.
The chair is a Parker Knoll, upholstered (by me!)in grey wool flannel with embroidered cross stitch.
The pouff is knitted lambswool.

I keep trying to design a knitted doll, its so hard to get the character and expression right. This is my dolly so far - she is nearly there but not quite. I hope to have her ready for Mid Century modern which I am taking part in in March, sharing a stand with Liz ( dicky bird ) which should be fun.....if I am ready!

Christmas at my mum's in Crossgar, N Ireland. What a wonderful Christmas day with blue sky, snow and sledging! It was so cold the snow was dry crystals - not possible to make snow men or have a snowball fight, but we still managed to have fun.

During our Christmas break in N Ireland we visited the recently refurbished Ulster Museum which was a really fun day. There were wonderful 'hands on' rooms on each level. I loved the selection of shoes and this beautiful Inuit doll.

I found this wind up tin toy at a car boot sale at my daughters school, from the 60's or 70's, I say its for the children but it's really for me!

Always on the look out for old Galt toys, I got this wooden boat on Ebay. It's so clever, can be made into any shape you desire using the pegs and blocks. Kept me and the children busy for ages!

Last weekend I took part in 'Cubbyhole Kids' designer kids Christmas sale in Stoke Newington, London. It was great fun and I met up with other fantastic designer/makers, Virginia from Roddy and Ginger was there and Tamsin from i wish i was a... (great dressing up accessories for kids) both talented south London girls!
There were also lovely printed dresses and PJ's by Helen Gordon and printed lights by Helen Rawlinson

Another of my favourites Winters Moon was also exhibiting on Sunday - wonderful vintage finds for kids. I have a bit of an obsession with old puzzels and loved this number puzzle.

Emmanuelle's piano stool

This is a wonderful piano stool which I reupholstered as a commission for a friend Emmanuelle this summer. Peter did a beautiful design for the top cover based on shapes and images from the garden - decaying poppy petals, pea pods, curling vines and leaves. I hand embroidered the design on an Ian Mankin linen, a unique piece!

So we survived a very busy and successful Mid Century Modern show last Sunday! I managed to get a few shots of the stand I shared with le train fantome and Dicky Bird before the crowds decended!
It was lovely to work with these two ladies and we were all exhausted by the end of the day.
The work collaboration Fanja (le train fantome) and I did together producing 3 cushions using images of Lumi and Lewis got a great response, they are available to buy from Fanja's shop now!
I have also been working on a new patchwork/tile cushion, hope you like it!

3 is the magic number! I am teaming up with 2 very talented girls, le train fantome and dicky bird, to take part in 'Mid Century Modern' in Dulwich College on 14th November.

Peter and I went to Berlin in September where Peter Nencini took part in an exhibition at a new gallery space 'Direktorenhaus'.
Alot of hard work from Peter paid off and he produced some lovely pieces, I especially liked the large leather piece, constructed on site to fit the location.You can find out more about this piece on his blog

I helped with the sewing, patterns and embroidery on a couple of the chair pieces. The pads on this childs chair worked really well, at the back they fill in the empty space between the structure of the chair.

Sadie's chair from our kitchen table was used for this piece - she has almost got over it now! I made this cover following Peters design and specifications, covering and exposing parts of the wood.

I must apologise to everyone who has left lovely comments for me on my blog, I have been pretty bad at keeping it up to date and chatting back but that is going to change!
I just keep knitting/upholstering away at home and trying (not very successfully!) to keep the house tidy and children fed and watered so I am a bit tired when it comes to opening the lap top!
But it would be great to put some of my recent stuff on here to see what anyone thinks.
I found a stool which just reminded me of a cowboy as it had bow legs so using the picture of the knitted cowboy below as inspiration I cross stitched a wild west scene.
I did this using waste canvas on top of the linen, stitched my design then wet the fabric and pulled out the waste canvas threads - I should have taken photos of the process - next time!

I found this wonderful site for vintage knitting patterns The toys are lovely but there are also great kids and adult clothes. You can buy the patterns online. What lead me here was the cowboy as I have a stool to upholster which has bow legs and looks like a cowboy! So I wanted to do a cowboy related image on the top, watch this space!

The hand embroidery on this chair was based on a Ragasthan man's jacket - I took elements of the design although the jacket was beautifully intricate.

Dulwich Festival Artists Open House

So we did it!
Peter and I transformed our living room into a shop/showroom for the weekend for Dulwich Festival's Artists Open House and it looked pretty good, especially if you saw it on Friday evening - we were up until the wee small hours transforming it, unfortunately you can't move in our bedroom as thats were all the stuff went!

Felted Lambswool cushions;

I have started doing a range of lambswool knitted toys - these have been great fun to do, I make it up as I go along! Here is 'Skinny Monkey'

I have been gathering vintage tea towels from various sources and made them into this range of bags I like to call 'Tea Bags'. These were for sale at the Open House sale for £25 each. They are all lined with an inside pocket.

Sally Nencini 'Mayo Chair'
I re-upholstered this lovely little 1940's chair and re-waxed the wood. For the top cover I machine stitched the leaf outline and then hand embroidered the inner leaf. I call it the 'Mayo Chair' as I did the hand work in Mayo, west Ireland, and it somehow reminds me of there.

Sally Nencini 'Come To Life Chair'
This is a family collaboration as it is a poem written by Sadie Nencini age 8, Peter designed the layout and design of the words and I hand embroidered the type onto a vintage french hemp sack. The chair was reupholstered with fibre and felt and a newly sprung seat.

Shadow Chair 1
Here I re-upholstered the armchair with fibre and horse hair and re sprung the seat and back.I machine embroidered the top cover using an image of autumn branches. I projected the black and white image onto the chair so it destorted over the seat and arms and followed the outline of the shadow with a stitched line.

This is done in a similar way but using an image of maple leaves, the fabric is a hemp linen blend.

Sally Nencini 'Tuft Chair'
This was Granty's chair and had been upholstered in brown velvet and foam. I striped it back to the frame and re upholstered it using traditional methods (horse hair and fibre)and recovered it in this vintage linen/silk stripe. Using matching coloured embroidery thread I hand tufted the front arm scrolls and did a running stitch in sections at the back, arms and sides.

Sally Nencini Screen
I striped and recovered this screen using a vintage printed fabric on the back. I took the images from the print of leaping dear, leaves and Aztec shapes, enlarged them and made a picture for the front of a big leaping dear kicking up leaves.I used a mixture of machine and hand embroidery and applique.Quite hard to see in the picture!

Knitting

Above are 4 Knitted dollies I made from felting lambswool. I knitted the bodies by machine after doing a term of experimental machine knitting at Morley College.

This is a little bag I made for my son Syd. He had done a drawing of a dinosaur which I made into a knitted pattern repeat. I then felted it, knitted a picot edge and sewed it all together.

The above 3 fabrics are vintage Svenskt Tenn designed by Josef Frank. These were for sale on eBay. I just love these botanical prints and the colours are so vibrant. Some of these prints are available from Libertys store, London

I love this print, got some lengths on eBay which I have made into bags, cushions etc and upholstered a small 1950's stool.

This nursery print from the 1950's was a bed spread. A crazy combination of images that seem to work together.

I like elements of this print like the cart wheels.

Cute 1960/70 cat print.

This was another vintage bedspread dating from the early sixties listed on eBay.

I like these tree shaped trees, like children would draw if asked them to draw a tree.

This is a vintage Swedish textile I missed on eBay, I like the naive tree style and the inner detail.

Lovely 1950's print, I used this as my inspiration for the 'Mayo chair' above. I bought it from hideawaydesigns on eBay.

This is an Abbatt wooden puzzle c.196-.Shelf appeal have a good description of their toys. I'm interested in the simplicity and colours. We used to have one of these but Dad taped the pieces down which wasn't a good idea.
